Pre-K Educational Overview

Ages 4-5

Academics

As with all our classes, your child’s day begins with a warm and loving greeting from our nurturing staff. Your child is then encouraged to put their personal belongings away in their designated area, continuing on to 20 minutes of Free Play. During Free Play, children are given the freedom to choose from building blocks, pretend play, puzzles and art materials, facilitating independence and decision-making along with social and emotional development.

Following Free Play, children come together with their friends and staff for Circle Time. During Circle Time the children discuss the weather, update the class calendar, review student responsibilities and discuss the week’s theme. Literature is typically used along with the Smartboard to assist in the interactive Circle Time experience.

RNS’s staff is so welcoming, the teachers, aides, and directors are like family. They are warm and kind, really engage with the children and give everyone individual attention.

Activities

Group Activity/Lesson follows Circle Time, Here the children work collectively on the daily thematic lesson. By utilizing a balanced program of thematically-based, hands-on activities in STEAM (science, social studies, technology/engineering, art and mathematics), our staff is able to continue to present our four-year olds with information that appeals to all their senses, encouraging learning while having fun.

The Group Activity/Lesson can range from a science experiment, an art project, following a recipe or even constructing and building a specific item.

A healthy snack is typically served around 10:30am.

Once children have completed their Group Activity/Lesson, Tray Work is set out around the room with games and activities specifically designed to continue to develop fine motor skills and cognitive development.

Daily visits to our multi-purpose room for Music, Yoga, Pottery and Cooking are also part of your child’s RNS curriculum.

Lunch is served at 12:30 followed by optional Enrichment classes.

Through the implementation of thematically-based, hands-on activities across the subjects, free play, and encouraged exploration, our curriculum keeps the Development Continuum Skills at the forefront of the program while our experienced and nurturing teachers work to encourage your child’s progress in those areas in which they are ready to advance.
